about

Brisbane based artist, ICHABOD's CRANE, brings a unique dreamy aesthetic to her indie-folk/blues tinged tunes. Acoustic & electric guitar, piano and other samplings of sounds intertwine delectably with intriguing lyricism to create an engaging musical atmosphere. Influenced by such artists as Cat Power, Coco Rosie and the Dirty Three & 'anyone who can captivate an audience in exquisite & subtle ways'.

Ichabod's Crane recorded a 10 track album, HONEYDEW, in early 2011. Collaborating with other musicians including Sophie Adamus (Deep Blue) on cello, Steve Darvall (New Columbia) on vocals and Melinda Laidlaw on drums. Recorded & mixed by Yanto Browning, at Airlock Studios in Samford, the songs bring to the listener a warmth in sound, texture and lyricism.

Ichabod's Crane has performed at the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Festival, consecutive years at Sydney's Peat's Ridge Music Festival (08-09 & 09-10), as well as at numerous venues in Brisbane, northern NSW, Melbourne and in Tokyo, Japan. Ichabod's Crane also collaborated with Portuguese artist, The Partisan Seed, on the song Ofelia, which appears on his second album, Indian Summer.

HONEYDEW - 2011 - REVIEWS

RAVE MAGAZINE (BRISBANE) : TUESDAY, 24 APRIL 2012
ICHABOD’S CRANE – Honeydew
(Lost Bicycle Records)

A trio of cross-legged, cello-wielding folk wonders

While writing this review of the debut album by Brisbane trio Ichabod’s Crane, I wanted to use words such as: delicate, fragile, pleasant, and innocent.

The album, Honeydew, is all of those things – however this doesn’t mean their music is too glossy or sugary; I don’t want to laminate their piece of rustic parchment.

The three ladies and their three main instruments of acoustic guitar, cello and drums, take their cues from territory similar to that of Julia Stone, with cryptic and image-rich lyrics.

Under the canvas of loving, yet starry-eyed vocals and harmonies, the cello provides a wonderful floating gravity.

Using quite a minimalist arrangement, the girls never reach those full-band choruses, but nor do they seem to wish to.

Let me offer you a peculiar parallel – if it were possible for a band to marry another band, I think Ichabod’s Crane and Husky would make a good pairing.

I look forward to sitting cross-legged at either their next show, or their civil union ceremony (honestly, I’ll crash both).

Brisbane folk trio Ichabod's Crane
Review by Mardi Lumsden

The long-awaited debut album from Brisbane folk trio Ichabod's Crane, named Honeydew, is finally here!

Originally the moniker for singer, guitarist and keyboardist Charity Carleton's solo work, the group has grown to include Sophie Adamus (cello, vocals) and Melinda Laidlaw (drums, percussion).

After Charity's two solo EPs 'A Live Bird' (2006) and 'The Devil & the Deity' (2007) the trio began work on Honeydew, which was released in February this year.

The result continues to showcase lovely husky sounds, warm cello lines and lyrics that are a little bit whimsical.

This is folk with a mix of jazz and world music influences which is why the go down so well at festivals like the recent Adelaide Fringe Festival and the 2008 and 2009 Peat's Ridge Sustainable Arts and Music Festival.
